GCC not able to create executables

I am getting this identical error when I try to compile a couple of pacjages
(catdoc, and Gnu yase). I just did a complete fresh install Solaris 8, GCC
2.95 and Make 3.79 today, no other changes other than putting usr/local/bin
in the path, and it doesn't seem to like it:
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.
I am the worlds least knowledgable 'C' person, so I thought I'd throw this
one out to you guys
