Sun Can't See ESS

Greetings.

I have a SunFire 280 with an additional X6799 Single Fibre Channel
adapter connected to an Inrange switch which is subsequently connected
to an IBM ESS Shark. My problem is that the Sun doesn't create any
disk devices from the Shark over the fibre loop. A prtconf shows that
the system sees the fibre card, and using sunvts to test the adapter
passes all tests (selftest, checksum, loopback, even the 'connected to
storage?' test), but boot -r doesn't result in any ssd's being built
for anything on that adapter. Checking the switch shows that traffic
is going in and out the lines to that adapter when testing is done,
and we have other (non-Sun) hosts connected to that switch that can
talk just fine to the Shark, so I think there's some setting either
on the Sun or Shark that I have to tickle to get them to talk so the
Sun can discover the storage assigned to it, but I just can't figure
out what that setting might be. Any ideas? I'll post a summary.
