anonymous ftp rights

Thanks to Matthew Stier and Tim Carlson who both clarified the problem.
The files must reside in ~ftp You
cannot follow symlinks out of ~ftp since ~ftp has been chroot'ed to and
is in fact the root of your file system when you login anonymously.
Normally setting up an anonymous FTP server involves running the ftp daemon
via chroot, to change the daemon's concept of what the root directory is.
What happens, is that (for an example) /home/ftp, in the applications view,
now becomes / (the root directory) and nothing outside of this directory
(or its subdirectories) exists.
After getting these responses I manned ftpd. Guess I should've done that
in the first place.

This is what I'm trying to do: I've set up an anonymous ftp server but I want to get to other directories other than those in the ftp home directory. I have made links to the directories I want and can see the links but when I try to cd to them it tells me 'no such file or directory.'
Anyone know what I'm missing?
