Question for old thing

For some reasons, we still need PPP dial-up in a workstation. Currently the modem is hooked up directly on a serial A/B port, so the modem is at Port A. I was trying to use A as console ( it has to be ) and B as modem, after connecting the Y splitter, the machine just hang on the midway during booting, it might be the ppp software. Anybody can troch me what I was missing? I ready saw the booting info from console, so it was not on PROM ttya level. Thank you in advance.
