pam_unix.so.1 writable by group problem

Dear All,

I have an E450 with Sol 5.7 on it which was working fine for a long period
now but as I was trying to su to root locally on the machine it gives an
error in the messages file that the pam_unix.so.1 is writable by group
(which is true when I checked it out) and therefore it dies and gives sorry
output, I searched the net but with no luck, help on this will be very much
appreciated.
