Corrupt /etc/group, /etc/passwd
2007-12-24 19:54:00
Long time lurker, first time poster.
For most of my short unix life, I've been nonchalantly making modifications to
my /etc/group and /etc/passwd files through vi. Although I haven't had any
major problems that I've noticed to date, a fellow admin noticed that he can't
use modification programs to edit the files now.
Admintool segfaults, usermod returns errors and doesn't make changes, although
pwconv does work after a manual modification to /etc/passwd.
My question is: How do I return these files (/etc/passwd or /etc/group) to a
usable state so I can use admintool or usermod on them?
Thanks in advance. Promise to summarize.
