hooking up plextor scsi external to ultra 5: SCSI-2 to SCSI-5 cabling issue.

I can really use some expert advice here:
We bought a Plextor 12/10/32S SCSI external CD writer
a while back and having issue connecting it to our
Ultra-5 Sun host.
The CDRW has Ultra SCSI interface (HD-50 pins,
SCSI-II, I believe?) and the Sun server has a Symbios
SCSI adapter (Sym22801). The card has two types of
connectors, one is outside of the box (.8mm VHDCI
pin), and the other two connectors are inside of the
box and have 68 pins (HD-68)
When I connect the CDRW to the 68-pin connector, all
works fine. I also got a cable from cablesnmor.com for
connection from HD-50 to VHDCI-68. However, as soon as
I connect that cable, the CDRW unit shuts itself off.
I really want to make the .8mm connection work because
that way, I can close the ultra-5 box permanently (I
have taken its cover off and left it open for a
while).
