KDE starting problem

downloads and I've run the /opt/sfw/kde/dtlogin/install-dtlogin script,
but when logging in with KDE I get a splash screen saying the KDE is
being started, then it throws me back to dtlogin.
I've searched the web for an answer but can't find anything...
I've not found any logs showing anything obvious.
Any pointers most welcome.
