DiskSuite summary

I'm a believer in the idea that summaries should summarize, not simply

repackage.

1) Disk Suite does indeed allow one to get past the 2G file system

limit in SunOS, and several respondents use it for that purpose.

2) Backup is reported to work fine .. however

3) One respondant reported difficulties due to the fact that the

backup represents a "file larger than 2G." The only sense I can

make of it is that you can't dd a >2G backup image from place to

place, since the other folks made it clear that they took backups

of >2G file systems all the time.

4) One person warned that there was a performance cost of 15-20%. I

No one else reported that, and I'm inclined to suspect that it

would be tied to the more complex mirroring activities.

5) One person waggled an electronic finger at me over the risk that,

by making a very large file system, I was increasing the recovery

time for disk failure. This is not a problem for me personally,

because I am not combining multiple disks, I'm just avoiding

breaking a single disk into more than one file system.

Thanks,

benson
