Thanks again to the second group to answer my question: Annette, David,

Hap, Jose, Stefan and Tom. I never should have doubted the wisdom of the

Sun Gurus (tm). The "code" to this one is to convert images to xpm

format, but use the extension .pm. Copy the images to the system wide

/usr/dt/backdrops or your personal backdrops directory. Restart

Workspace Manager may be necessary to get images to display properly.
