Raid 5 thru Disksuite

I have a little performance problem.
My configuration is that i have a Sun 450 with 4 disks on the internal
controller which are mirrored both of them.
THen i have 8 disks on a lvm controller that are configured as a RAID 5.
The file system on the RAID 5 is about 245GB the use i was thinking about
was to do backup to disk and then to tape during the day.
But the problem is that the throughput is so bad so when my ncftpget scripts
are starting i get like 1MB/s and it is not misconfigured network as i
thought first , i went through all the switches and made sure that they were
100MB fdx.
So I was wondering if you would have any suggestions how i could do it
better ?
The machines i am backing up are som AIX machines and the amount of data are
about 150gb but the machines are on different subnets and so are configured
on different adapters .
