DLT Tape backups

I'm administrating a Legato tape jukebox and I've come to learn that the
tapes have *never* been removed or decommissioned. I don't think this is a
normal practice. What's the normal practice of removing DLT tapes from
rotation? Do you have a set period of time or do you only use them a
certain number of times?
If you would care to share your information with me I'd be glad to
summarize.
