serial port on E450

the serial port. i removed the modem to directly
attach the E450's serial port to our Cyclades console.
Everything seems fine - until you try to use the
serial port - then the box crashes. some type of
connect gets made - i see a few characters of garbage
on the console.
any special settings or changes made to the serial
port that would make it not work with a console?
i've tried the obvious - i have used a serial cable
from another Sun that i know works. we also have
twenty other Sun boxes of various types, and they all
work fine on the Cyclades console.
