Solaris 2.x: backup question

2007-12-25 11:05:00

Thanks to the many users of this list that responded to my questions.

Here are the response that I received (Q=Question,A=Response):

Q: do you have to kill all processes b4 doing backup?

A: single-user mode better for full backup

Q: how do you check the max # of users a machine can support (not the #

of user processes)?

A: sysdef -i

Q: how do you check the security attribute of each user?

A: -/etc/passwd, .cshrc, .login {the uname setting}

   -type groups <user_name>

   -umask

Q: how safe are TAR and CPIO for backup?

A: -use ufsdump (tar and cpio have limitations)

-ufsdump is used for doing full backups (faster)

-tar is used for dumping directory

   -tar good

Q: how do you access the kernel file to modify certain parameters --

where is it located?

A: -add stuff in /etc/systems file

   -in /etc/system, then REBOOT

   -system.h and then RECOMPILE

SURVEY: I am interested in knowing if anyone have read this summary,

please send me an email so that I can see who actually read this.

Thanks again for your help!
