serious problem with installing IPSEC on Solaris 8 software

Hi
I wanted to experiment with securing NFS using IPSEC on Solaris 8 server and client. Got as far as installing the official Sun software packages recommended on the following site:-
http://www.samag.com/print/documentID=19838
and rebooted. I was expecting nothing much to change until the system was configured. ...
... however, a number of completely bizzare things have happened.
The Xserver on the server won't start; otherwise it is functioning OK.
The client can start an X session but (a) no longer offers a window maker as choice of window manager - a manual addition i had previously made (b) CDE starts but cannot load a background image or a window manager. You get something like the failsafe but with dtterm (c) no networking. ifconfig -a shows the network interface at 0.0.0.0 (d) probably connected to this, nslookup returns '*** can't initialize resolver'.
There may be other problems i've not noticed yet. Before i undertake a painful backout exercise, has anyone else seen this or anthing similar?
Thanks for any hints or tips. I'll summarise if/when i find out what went wrong.
Ahau K'in
