Solaris 6, Solaris 7, Solaris 8 and LDAP...

2007-12-25 10:50:00

Greetings,

Sorry for the delay with posting this summary.

I had two responses to this original question:

>Greetings Sun Managers,

>

>I've got a Solaris 7 box running SunDS 3.1 with a heap of users (6000+) and

>am using SunDS to authenticate these users, no problems there.

>

>I've got a couple of Solaris 6 boxes using the abovementioned Solaris 7 box

>as a NIS master which lets the same users authenticate using the NIS <->

>LDAP stuff that comes with SunDS on the first box, no problems there

either.

>

>I've just set up an Intel Solaris 8 box and am about to set up a SPARC

>Solaris 8 box and want to know how I can get it to look at the first box

>(Solaris 7 w/ SunDS LDAP server) for user authentication/information using

>LDAP but still use DNS for hosts and that sort of thing. I don't want to

>run an LDAP server on the Solaris 8 boxes (well, not yet anyhow) and don't

>want to have the LDAP stuff stored locally on those boxes.

>

>On the Solaris 8 box I I copied my nsswitch.ldap to nsswitch.conf and

>rebooted and got loads of errors about non-existant files and the like. I

>can't find anywhere in the list archive or on docs.sun.com what I need to

do

>to get this working but it sure seems like the sort of thing a few people

>would have done.

Thanks to Casper Dik and Will Cox.

Casper suggested that the solutions lie with the supplied 'ldapclient'

command, partly correct.

Will sent me a .pdf from Sun which explains how to set up both your client

and server to do exactly what I asked. It's a fairly manual process with

lots of editing of your directory server config files which I don't want to

do until I've read through it several times and understand what I'm

potentially breaking :)

If anyone wants the PDF file let me know, if there's enough demand I'll put

it on the web somewhere and post a link to the list.

Thanks again to Casper and Will.
