Problem starting gvim

I have a user with a Citrix FR2 session on Solaris 8 latest patches and
he can't start some X applications.
He can start dtterm but not gvim.
This does not happen straight away when he starts his Citrix session.
Most users don't have this problem and there sessions are a lot older
(several months old)
The ICA client is running on Linux but I don't think the type of client
makes any difference.
How can I track down the problem?
