How do you manage your root passwords?

I have a question for those of you who manage from ten to fifty Solaris boxen.
What procedures/systems do you use for managing the root passwords?
I have searched SANS <http://www.sans.org> and CERT <http://www.cert.org/> but
they are offering the usual on how to select a password and not much in
the way of what I want.
What I want is more in line with what is presented by the US Federal Information
Processing Standards Publication 112:

I am hoping that some of you can point me to a source for generally accepted
practises
I am also interested in what you do at your site, what you would like to do
and why.
Finally, if you have any pitfalls to relate please share.
