SUMMARY: Network trouble seen with Netscape (4.7x)

2007-12-24 19:43:00

Gurus,

Here is the Summary. Many thanks to Rajdeep Sengupta, as his advice sent
me on the right track.

He pointed out a problem with netscape which requires you to "touch" the
Inbox file in ~whatever/nsmail. I touched this, and the problem went
away, but only once. i.e I could only open one window and when I tried to
open another one netscape froze again.

So I took a look around, and it appeared that, when my file system fille
dup the night before it crashed the lockd daemon. The lockd daemon is
reponsible for managing shared files over NFS. As such a file that is not
locked may not have proper access.

After restarting this daemon the problem was curred.

Thanks

Cian.

p.s. I took a long look through the /var/adm/messages and sure enough
there was enough evidence in there to show the lockd was failing.

Moral: ALWAYS READ THE /var/adm/messages. I bow my humble head.
