GCC on Solaris 8

I'm having trouble installing the Gnu C compiler. I've downloaded
gcc-2.95.3-sol8-sparc-local.gz from sunfreeware.com
and gunzipped it, but pkgadd doesn't recognize it as a package. I've
also downloaded earlier/later versions from
mirror sites and I get the same error, so I know it's something I'm
doing.
Any ideas what to check?
(I've already made sure to use pkgadd -d ./ )
