Solaris 8 IP Multipathing and Solaris 7 Interface Groups

2007-12-24 20:07:00

I have a Solari s7 Ex000 with 2x happy-meal ethernet NICs (which don't
have an
FCode ethernet address). The primary hme is up with multiple virtual
interfaces
configured on different networks (ie hme1:1 --> hme1:15).
ip_enable_group_ifs
is currently disabled (0).

Basically I want to get the 2nd interface up, probably running more
virtual interfaces
on each phsyical interface just to spread the load a little as we're
starting to get various
hme kstat ierrors. [group_ifs will only load-balance over physical, not
logical interfaces].
Are there any tools to check the load balancing like come with the
trunking software?
(there's always netstat + snoop I suppose!)

As I see it all I have to do is plumb and ifconfig a fake MAC address
for the other hme
interface [we're not using VLANs] and then set ip_enable_group_ifs to
1.
Does this sound about right? [there maybe some jiggery-pokery I need to
do with routing?]

Are there any advantages to using Solaris 8 IP Multipathing (apart from
failover) that
are not included in the ip_enable_group_ifs functionality? - do you
have to set
ip_enable_group_ifs when using IP MP ?

many thanks,
Mike Kiernan
