domainname gives correct answer but returns status code 9

Does anyone know why /usr/bin/domainname would return the correct
string as in /etc/defaultdomain but give an error status of 9? The
machine is a SunBlade 100 with Solaris 8 07/01, patched with a recent
recommended cluster with kernel patch 108528-10. Using truss does not
seem to provide any useful clues. This one has me stumped.
