setting video card resolution on Solaris 8

Hi all,

How can I find out what utility is used to set the resolution for a Creator 3D video
card on Solaris <besides google>?

And can anyone give me some background as to why we have to use a proprietary utility to set the
resolution ? I come from a background of using XFree86 where I can just tweak /etc/X11/XF86Config.
