doubt about patchadd

I have about related with patches and patchadd. Sometimes you have to
install a patch that affect to two or more packages. If you have all
those packages installed, there is no problem with patchadd.
But if you don't have installed just one of those packages, you can't
install the patch, even if they affect to software you have installed.
What it is the correct behaviour in such a situation? Do I have to
ignore the patch? Do I have to install missed packages? Is there any way
to install the patch?
And one more question: is it not better to make patches that affect to
just one package? I am familiarized with redhat and it updates packages
individually, so this problem doesn't affect to redhat. I think it is a
better solution that sun's one.
