nss_* module backend api

I am working on writing an nss module that would use berkeley db or possibly
mysql. However, I am having trouble finding any documentation on how this is
accomplished. If anyone has seen some documentation on creating new backends
for the nsswitch I would be greatful for any help you could provide.
