Solaris 8 on a Sparcstation 20 - "bootblk - can't find the boot program"

Ive just received and installed (fresh install, not an upgrade) Solaris 8
on a Sparcstation 20.
The installation appeared to complete without any problems, but when the
system rebooted itself, the boot monitor complained bootblk cant find
the boot program and returned me to the ok prompt.
During the installation, I chose the default (recommended) layout, which
places swap in the first slice of the root disk.
My ROM revision level is 2.22
Do I need to upgrade my ROM before I can run Solaris 8 or is something else
going on that I need to be aware of?
The system previously had been running Solaris 6.2
