Standards for usernames, group names in Solaris?

Solaris' official standards are for what is a legal user name, legal group
name, etc.
I'm not having much luck with Google or docs.sun.com
Can someone point me please to a set of standards?
(also, anecdotes about things that aren't supposed to break but do are
appreciated. Our environment has mixed Solaris, OS X, OS 9, Windows 2000,
WIndows XP etc)
