intermittent ping issue

shed some light:
We have this server that at times not pingable
(therefore not accessible) from any host on the same
subnet, but pinging it from any other subnets is fine.
It is not a name resolution issue. Even ping using IP
address miserably fails (no answer from host).
It does not look like a network issue, 'cause none of
the other hosts on this subnet has the issue.
It does not look like a NIC issue. We can ping and
access from any other subnet to this host.
Any idea or similar experience? TIA.
