Problems after upgrading to 4.1.2 from 4.1.1

Current solutions:

A. Use 'ypserv -d > /dev/null' This works but I believe it is rather

slow. I got many different methods of fixing this problem but

there should be one way - one Sun way. What exactly is the proper

method to get DNS running on a NIS server which only contains

    local hosts?

B. Using a patched version of xlogin which does the necessary

changes. The one problem with this is that it does not seem to

get the necessary resourdes from ../xdm/Xresources so it says to

    contact me (the sys.admin).

C. No one sent a required patch list for 4.1.2.

It works for us (small consolation, but ...) I'd try remaking my NIS tables:

touch /etc/hosts

cd /var/yp

make

(Make sure that netid gets pushed as well.)

What we have done here is patched xlogin to do this for the user.

If you wish, I could send this to you via email. However, I would

recommend moving to X11R5, and using xconsole to do your console

monitoring.

Under 4.1.1 I had installed the MX version of sendmail by copying

/usr/lib/sendmail.mx to /usr/lib/sendmail. After the "upgrade" I noticed that

the vanilla sendmail had been re-installed. I simply did the copy

(ie cp /usr/lib/sendmail.mx /usr/lib/sendmail) over again. I had no trouble

with DNS besides this.

Hi James!

Problem A: The only thing that rings a bell is that you must now load

the dynamic libraries (shlib). I dont think the installer would do this for

you. right now you have the static libraries, which don't use the DNS.

 Hope this helps!

I suggest you to install the resolv+ package in your libc, it

permits to configure your name lookups. We are running it on top of

4.1.1 and 4.1.2 machines on all our network (approx 30 suns). It's

very easy to install on sun machines, just follow the intructions carefully.

The libc by Sun does not query the nameserver by default.

    anonymous ftp: resolv+-2.0.tar.Z

(/pub/misc, ferkel.ucsb.edu)

There is a 2.1 version but there is a bug in it, it will be corrected

and installed one day on ftp.uu.net.

change the startup of your ypserv to be ypserv -d. This will force the

server to do DNS lookups when the NIS lookup fails.

This is because sun finally fixed the security hole associated with that

ioctl. xdm owns the console, and will not allow another process to steal it.

well, for the DNS part of your question you need to get a new copy

of the resolver library.

I believe there is one ucsd.edu (128.54.16.1) in the

/incoming/libc.so.1.7.1. This file goes in /usr/lib.

after copying it there type ldconfig as root and try out DNS.

I haven't tested the library yet, but it did come from sun.

Okay, try ftping to imhotep.usask.ca, in the directory pub/X, file

xlogin.tar.Z. While I haven't documented it, there are two compilation

flags to set:

CONSOLE (already done in the Imakefile)

CONSOLEDEV (defaults to /dev/console - should be no problem if

     you don't define it.)
