sun email/account names too long

2007-12-25 11:33:00

Original query:

> We are replacing an old mailserver with a shiny new Sun. Unfortunately,

> the users all previously had email addresses of first-initial-last-name

> regardless of the length so user Jerry Weisenheimer had an account

> jweisenheimer. While Solaris (2.7) complains about usernames longer

> than eight characters, it dutifully sets it up. Ironically, mail functions

> normally with the longer names. The problem is if users try to change their

> own password, the OS only reads the first eight then can't find the shortened

> name in the passwd/shadow files.

>

> One option would be to make many aliases (one per user) mapping the shorter

> to longer names and re-educate the users that their new email address (at

> least for logging in and using POP/IMAP) is the truncated name.

>

> How have others dealt with this?

Thanks to:

Al Lilianstrom

Stephen D. B. Wolthusen

Thomas Wardman

Keith A. Clay

Mike van der Velden

  and others

A number are using LDAP. I have a restricted shell set up. Once I realized

that it COULD be done, it was just a matter of tweaking the shell (smrsh)

to pass it $LOGNAME.

Thanks
