Solaris and /dev/rmt/0...

I have a question about something I thought I understood. The rmt directory contains links to the tape instances in the devices directory. The listing for instance 0 has numorous links. These links are and not limited to: 0, 0n, 0l, 0ln, 0m, 0mn, etc. Each of the letters mean something, ex. n=no-rewind, l=low compression, m=medium compression, etc. The mt command allows you to basic tape drive functions like rewind, release, eject,... ,status. I have found lately the I am running into a quirk that doesn't make sense. I know when I want to compress a file to tape with tar, I use "tar cvf /dev/rmt/0m {filename}". When I want to eject a tape from drive 0, I have to use "mt -f /dev/rmt/0m offline". I know that by default mt looks for drive 0. So I get to my question: why does "mt offline" of "mt status" hang in the forground until I shut down the tape drive or maually eject the tape?
No rush on this, its just been bugging me.
