remote syslog and syslog.conf question

I am trying to set up remote syslogging on a system.
I have added the log server to the clients host file and added the following to the syslog.conf:
auth.notice @syslog
auth.notice /var/log/authlog
I have HUP'ed the syslog services on both boxes and while things are being logged on the machines nothing is showing up at the log server from the client.
I think I should also be able to combine the two lines but when I try:
auth.notice @syslog, /var/log/authlog
Nothing is logged
What am I missing? Or do you need more information.
