Remove Tape Drive From Live System

All,

I have a Sunfire V120 w/Sol 8 which has an external tape drive attached to
it. Can I safely remove the tape drive while the system is live without
consequence and/or risk? I have no intention of re-adding it later, but
cannot reboot the system.

Opinions appreciated.
