What a great list, thanks for all the responses.

I received a number of ideas, which I'm going through now. They included

uuencode, mutt, mpack, metamail, mmencode,mpack and a few scripts. (uuencode was

the most popular recommendation)

examples:

uuencode filename description | mailx -s "Subject is this" root@my.box.com

or

mutt -s "subject" -a attachment.tgz you@your.host < /some/text

or
