Window Mgr & Windows that support colors

(CDE) that comes on the workstations. With that, I use xterm, but it
has been pretty limited for configuring colors. BG, FG, text, cursor,
etc are pretty much it. But I want to take advantage of color options
in my mail reading application, mutt. It just isn't working. I've
tried using xdefaults and various resources, to no avail, predictably.
If anyone has a tutorial, or ideas for me, I'd sure like to hear them.
You see, I'm graphically challenged....
