(unresolved) : strange hme0 messages in the log file

2007-12-25 11:36:00

hi all,

my original question is at the end of this email

well, the problem is not entirely solved yet, i guess its a wait and

watch game that i'm going to have to play here.

a lot of ppl replied saying that the message was normal and everything

was fine. but that fact is that its only these new ultra30 and ultra5

machines which are giving this message in /var/adm/messages. none of my

older ultra1's or ultra2's or hp's or sgi's have ever shown this, other

than at boot time.

ppl suggested that i check my ethernet connections and hub... i did ,

the cables are fine and the switch is configured properly, and doesnt

show any resets or errors. Its a superstack by 3com.

it was also suggested to confirm the interface was not running in debug

mode by looking that flags in the ifconfig output.

one person said that it is a known problem with solaris2.5.1 with

auto-negotiating with some switches. the way to fix this is lock the

workstation to 100BaseT full duplex mode with the following commands

ndd -set /dev/hme adv_autoneg_cap 0

ndd -set /dev/hme adv_100hdx_cap 0

ndd -set /dev/hme adv_100fdx_cap 1

i did this and things were fine for a couple of days, until the "link

down-cable problem?" message showed up in the logs.

one more person shared a similar experience with me, in which an ultra5

showed the same behaviour. only , in his case, it had a RAID array

connected to it, while i have a backup device on the PCI-SCSI symbios

interface card. their only solution was to replace the ultra5. so, there

was no solution there either.

it seems to me increasingly, that these new ultra 5 line of workstation

from sun, arent good enough for heavy io.

thanks to all who replied. i appreciate your taking the time to help me

out here. i'll post a revised summary if we ever come to any conclusion

about this.

regards,

amol
