E-450 slows down

We are using Solaros 7 on E-450 Sun servers. The configuration is 4GB RAM,
72GB HDD and 4*400MHz CPUs.
The server is hosting 8 databases. The only kind of extrenal processes we
have on the server are those which just load data into the databases. A
single process might run for upto 3 to 4 hours.
It has been running fine for a month but of late, twice it has happened that
the server just slowed down. We tried to resolve this issue by killing some
of the database loading processes but still the processing remained only too
slow. Finally only the restarting the server helped.
We have done it twice and do not want to run in the similar problem again as
developers are constantly using this box. Can you please suggest a way to
monitor the server performance which can help us in zero-ing down on the
cause of this problem. Also, would you have a guess why this problem could
be occuring.
