NFS and NIS in a Medium Sized Site

Sorry the summary took so long.
Original Question;
Query as to normal method or reason for discouraging X mounting via nfs
of disks in different NIS domains.
Answers;
USe netgroups in the /etc/dfs/dfstab file e.g. ... -o rw=<netgroup> ...
The netgroup may contain hosts in other NIS domains provided they are
either fully qualified or resolvable via dns.
We also automount across NIS domains, this is resolved in the same
manner - the server allowing in the /etc/dfs/dfstab certain netgorups.
Things to bear in mind - uid's must be consistent across the domains and
the netgroups in each domain must be the same - we rdist the netgroup
from an rdist server.
The whole point of my quesiton was to see if it was normal practice to
do this. It seems if you must then do it but follow the rules,
otherwise discourage it. Historically it has been discouraged here due
to the problem of things hanging if something doesn't respond for some
reason or for scheduling maintenance. I wonder if soft mounts and
cachefs would help this (at least on read only file systems)?
