solaris system upgrade
2007-12-24 19:59:00
I have my little SparcStation-4 110 Mhz which I use at home as a PC
running Solaris 2.5.1. Over the years I accumulated some software
that I like to use, mainly text-oriented software development tools,
but every once in a while I boot Gimp on it too. Right now I have
to reinstall and I find a huge selection of systems to choose from,
all the way up to Solaris 8. The machine is not directly connected
to the Internet, and the 2.5.1 system currently suits me well.
But since I am going to reinstall anyway, I don't necessarily want
to use the same old system. So which one do I want?
My main objective is speed and software compatibility. The second
objective makes me want to go the 8 route, but isn't it going to be
slow on this machine? I have 96 MB of RAM. Disk space is not an
issue as far as the OS is concerned, but in general I don't have
vast quantities of disk here.
Thank you for any hints.
