java app startup error question

1)have installed java based app as /opt/mydir/myapp.
2)have updated /etc/.login and ~/.cshrc with the added
LD_LIBRARY_PATH and CLASSPATHs.

now if i do ~/myapp the app stops at
"initializing..wait".
But if i do /opt/mydir/myapp it starts, why?.any
ideas?.
my paths look ok.
