Tape Library's

Original Question: I am currently involved in the upgrading of our tape

library system. We have a DLT4000 library that has worked great. My question

to the list is has anyone tried the other tape library media such as AIT,

AME 8mm, or other? How has it performed? Due to the cost of these systems

I would appreciate your recommendations or your thoughts before making this

decision.

Summary: I received 11 responses and the consensus is DLT works great but is

nearing the end of its product cycle. Most responses (7) are going to or are

using the AIT-2 technology and 2 are going to the Exabyte Mammoth2 (M2)

technology. Those who are using the AIT-2 drives are very satisfied with

their performance and quality. The AIT-2 and M2 drives are comparable

technologies as they use 8mm Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media. The

AIT-2 www.spectralogic.com holds less data and has slightly slower data

rates than the newer M2 technology see www.m2wins.com (these are based on

the specification summary’s) but it looks like the AIT-3 drives will be

available soon and they will have more capacity and speed. In pricing these

technologies (I cant give exact amounts) DLT is by far the most expensive

with M2 quite a bit less and AIT-2 the lowest cost. These prices were based

on 2 drive systems with 30 or 40 tape cartridges.

I would like to thank those who responded, as always this is a great list.
