Problems Making kernel on 4.1.2

2007-12-25 7:49:00

Some time ago, I posted the following (apologies for the delay

in this summary--it's been AIX problem week here):

>Hi, I've just installed 4.1.2 on an SS2. I've reloaded my

>4.1.1 kernel config file from a backup, and am having trouble

>getting it to compile. Hopefully, someone can point me

>in the right direction.

>The failure is at the "loading vmunix" stage, with a bunch

>of undefined symbol messages. All except one (_svckudp_dupdrop)

>are _prom-something-or-other (I can provide details if needed).

>(The 4.1.1 kernel, recovered from backup, does run, but I'd druther

>make a new one.)

Thanks to the following for replies:

hans@smab.se (Hans C Larsson)

Dieter Muller <dworkin@merlin.rootgroup.com>

mcdonald@xenon.brooks.af.mil (Shawn McDonald)

melissa@spanky.Jpl.Nasa.Gov (Melissa Probst)

Replies fell into two categories: (1) merge the old kernel

config file with the 4.1.2 GENERIC kernel because there are

syntax changes in 4.1.2; and (2) be sure to remove the old

subdirectory containing the specific files for the system

(/sys/sun4c/MYSYSTEM) and re-run 'config'.

In my particular case, I cloned the entire /sys filetree

from another system already running 4.1.2 and the existing

kernel config file worked OK.
