easy way to make "/" root larger ?

we tried to move /etc to another filesystem and then link it to the root

to gain that space. it worked untill the reboot. it started a panic

reboot sequence complaing about the name_to_major file in /etc. so we

ended up just reloading Solaris and it all seems OK now.

Can someone fill me in about name_to_major?
