login question

We have a Sun 250 running 2.5.1. When we get to a login prompt and type in our user name and want to use the back space key to delete a mis-typed name, the backspace key will not work. Once we login in our .profile is read and the backspace will work. Can anyone tell me what and where do I set this so it will work while we are logging in. Thanks
