logrotate

Is there anyway to make logrotate use .gz extensions instead of .Z?
Also we currently are using an inhouse log rotator that starts with
.0.gz instead of start with 1?

instead of rotating:

from: /usr/local/apache/logs/access_log
to : /usr/local/apache/logs/access_log.1.Z
I want to rotate to:
/usr/local/apache/logs/access_log.0.gz

Is this possible?
