suggest messages to sun-managers be in plain text

2007-12-25 11:44:00

So far I received two YES votes and one NO vote.

One YES vote indicate this is already in the list charter. I include

the relevent part in this summary.

The NO vote does not make sense to me, so I include my comments after.

/* IMPORTANT: READ THIS BEFORE POSTING TO SUN-MANAGERS */

Please, no postings in HTML, rich-text-format, Microsoft Word,

Word Perfect, or any format that some people on the list would not

easily be able to read. Also, please post in English only; most

of our readers are not able to read other languages.

/* name withheld

This is my thought:

Please don't blame people who post messages on this

bulletin board. Not a single person should have the

obligation or responsibility to consider about what

YOU might use as your email front end program.

*/

My comment: First I do not think I am the only one who

can not read non-ascii format. Second of all, I think it is common

sense that you want your message to be read by as wide audience as

possible. A person who uses traditional unix mail reader should not

be left out of unix related discussions. Thirdly I do not think it

adds any benefit for the discussion to send HTML, send a simple

shell script as an attachment, etc.

Note that this is already included in the list charter. Trouble is,

many people who use the list have never read the damn thing!

/* From stefan@terradata.de

Michael,

this is a very good suggestion ! I use dtmail, and i can't read HTML mail

s too. So I throw them away without reading them.
