NFS mounting Oracle datafiles
2007-12-24 22:16:00
I am currently looking into the possibility of purchasing a V880 server with
6 internal disks. The reasons for this are that one of my companies
applications runs Oracle and has a new requirement to store up to 120Gb of
extra data. The current servers being used are DG/UX attached to a Clariion
array. (EEK!)
However, rather than simply attach a second array, I am toying with the idea
of buying the V880 and NFS mounting Oracle database files from the V880 onto
the DG/UX server.
According to Oracle, this is NOT a good idea. Oracle, and I quote say:
"It's important that the information get properly written to the redo logs,
and
NFS mounting those files increases the chances that they might be corrupted.
The protocol used to transfer data under NFS (UDP or User Datagram Protocol)
is not very reliable, and it doesn't keep track of states. Hence, there are
increased risks of writing bad data into your archive logs, which makes them
unusable for recovery.
Oracle datafiles should not be NFS mounted for the same reasons - reads and
writes to such files could be corrupted, and hence data would not be
accurately reported or recorded. "
I however, have been running a system in development doing exactly this for
18 months and have had no problems with NFS.
So, my questions are these:
1) Has anyone any experience good/bad with NFS and Oracle?
2) In Solaris 8, logging can be enabled on UFS filesystems. Can this be
enabled with NFS filesystems?
3) If the NFS filesystems are on Disksuite controlled devices, will SDS
(soon to be SVM) logging keep track of changes?
I will summarise any responses! Thanks in advance!
