<defunct> Process/lmgrd Problem
2007-12-24 21:33:00
die about once a day. Until I can resolve the problem with
lmgrd, I have just been stopping and restarting the program
when it stops responding.
However, I just noticed that doing this seems to be leaving
zombie (i.e. <defunct>) processes laying around... A LOT of
them! I currently have 958 zombies on the system that is
having this problem.
Please don't lecture me about what a zombie is and how you
can't kill it because it's already dead... I know all that.
Theoretically, these zombies should not cause a problem other
than taking up space in the process table but in actuality,
they appear to be making my system behave in odd ways. I
may be running up against the process limit here but I'm not
sure how to find out what the process limit is.
So, short of rebooting the system periodically, is there any
way to get rid of these zombies?
Secondarily, does anyone have any idea why my lmgrd (that has
been working fine for years) has suddenly decided to die about
once a day for no apparent reason? There is no information in
the license daemon log. Nothing on this system has been changed
recently - no changes have been made to the licensing system,
either adding, deleting, or changing licenses or programs.
The only thing that changed about the time this started happening
is that one of our developers started using this system to run
an Apache server to do some testing.
I'm running Solaris 8 on an Ultra-60 with dual 400 MHz processors.
Thanks,
Don
P.S. As an unrelated issue, can anyone point me to a Sys Admin
Guide for the Netra X1 platform? I've tried searching the Sun
site (including the docs site) but their search engine has always
proven to be worthless to me.
