oracle, bpstart_notify & tablespaces on solaris.

bpstart_notify puts tablespaces into backup mode when
executed. recently, or one reason or another, backups
to tape were not successful during their attempts due
to busy drives, no tapes, etc.. thus leaving
tablespaces in backup mode for quite a while,
sometimes haveing to manually remove them. is there a
way to have the/a script to check to make sure tapes
are available and drives are ready to be used prior to
putting the tablespaces in backup mode?

Any advice is appreciated, questions/comments are
welcome too.
