SUMMARY: Large disk and xerox printer utilities

Well this was fun and games. Apologies for the delay in the summary, but I
have been working on and off with the problem. Many thanks go to the
following for their replies and help:
Fletcher, Joe <joe.fletcher at Metapack.com>
mike.salehi at kodak.com
Matthew Stier <Matthew.Stier at fnc.fujitsu.com>
William Hathaway <wdh at ftope.com>
The solution to the first part of the software not working with a 9GB disk
was simply to create a very large file to occupy most of the space and then
try the installation again. I created a 5GB file using simply 'cp /dev/zero
/bigfile'. I took a time, but it did work. Alternatively you could use the
'mkfile' command, or use some of swap space to create a small partition.
Okay, so the installation worked. However, I then needed to configure a
remote printer - no problem using lpadmin. However, I still couldn't talk to
the printer - ping worked, but the software just bombed out with a bus fault.
Xerox use CentreWare software from the www.centreware.com site. It was then
that I realised that I had the wrong version of the software. I was using
our old software which had worked from about Solaris 2.5.1 though to Solaris
7. Centreware has software marked 'Solaris 2.4 and up', and this is what I
should have used.
I installed the software - no problems, and no need for any large files,
etc. However, I still couldn't talk to the printer. It just didn't seem to
want to do anything - no errors were given. Using syslogs 'lp.debug' showed
that there seemed to be nothing or something unintelligible coming out of
the printer (!). I tried using the bsd protocol (with lpadmin) and the tcp
protocol, and using ports 515 and 9100 - nothing worked.
At that time I thought I'd port scan the printer to see what it showed. It
showed that port 515 was available, as was port 80! Using netscape to
connect to the printer web port, it came up with a nice little interface
which allowed me to view the printer queue, the printer status, and allowed
me to submit print jobs with single or double-sided printing, stapling, A4
or A3 paper, etc, etc.
So, the overall summary was that I was wasting my time! The printer has a
web interface which works fine.
Apologies to those who replied for wasting their time as well, but I also
find it odd that when I spoke to a Xerox engineer here he said nothing about
the web interface (although he admitted he knew very little about the
software side of these things).
Regards,
John.
